The Capstone Program at NJIT
A new vision in real world education
- More than 6-Years of Experience:Started in the fall of 2002 at the CCS College, mandating that all seniors majoring in computer science, information systems and information technology complete a semester-long real world project.
- High Performance: Had success stories with more than 200 industry, government, student entrepreneur and academic clients over the last six years, many with multiple project proposals. Our capstone teams carried out more than 350 projects, including many multi-semester projects.

See some testimonials at: http://capstone.eljabiri.com/id17.html
- MultipleTracks:Offers multiple tracks for both students and sponsors including: Industry-sponsored projects rack, E-teams (Entrepreneurship) projects track, Research and development projects track, Project management and leadership track and Teaching and advising track. This is in addition to special tracks as Newark’s Mayor Projects portfolio, Provost Projects portfolio, open source OWASP grant-funded projects and the Health Industry tracks.

- University-wide: Evolved into a university-wide multidisciplinary project course experience involving students from five university colleges as well as graduate students. This allows both students and sponsors to have access to university-wide resources and work on more complex projects.
- High School Version:Expanded into a high school state-wide experience that offers unique real world project-based learning for high school students with emphasis on leadership, interdisciplinary skills, and strategic problem solving methods using Six Sigma. In Fall 2007, we will start our first middle school program as well.
National and International Collaborations: In the process of evolving business and academic partnerships US wide and globally, allowing significant exchange of experience across cultures and bringing a broad array of learning opportunities to our students.

- Simulated Environment:The class is run as virtual company - for learning purposes - to maximize the value for our students learning and provide a complete problem solving package to clients not only a number of interns.
- Real World Open University: Offers free peer-to–peer shared education network sessions focused on hot topics in the market today as well as in-class training. This experience helps tremendously in re-designing traditional college curriculum to reflect real world needs.
- Evolutionary Prototyping:Uses a 5-sprint rapid application requirements-driven development method (SCRUM & FDD) with an evolutionary prototyping approach that is customer -centered.

Rewarding and recognizing students accomplishments is one of program key features
- Team-based:Working in teams of three to four, interdisciplinary student teams analyze, design and implement software, information technology, business, engineering, science, arts and architecture related solutions in intensive collaboration with project stakeholders.
- Students Dedication: Each student is expected to spend approximately nine hours a week on the project, and many of them travel to their sponsor companies.

Sponsors are educators, advisors and partners not employers
-Learning Organization:The capstone program is a learning organization driven by added-value education. It is very different from any traditional internship program. It is a students-centered, real world project-based, team-driven, process-oriented and multidisciplinary learning and collaboration experience where students are viewed as partners (not employees) and sponsors are viewed as educators and collaborators (not employers).
- Fast Career Track: The capstone program offers a fast career development track for students and many students get job opportunities at the same companies they did their projects with.
- Strategic Partnerships:The capstone program has many strategic partners, advisors and supporters across the industry and across many departments at NJIT.
- Network of Networks and Community of Communities: The capstone program is a true “connections program” and a live-thru carefully designed experience for university, students, industry and community.
Alumni and Indsutry Support, Advisement and Mentorship The
program's best graduates come back as advisors, mentors, partners,
supporters and sponsors. The program bring university-wide resources,
industry resources and peer-to-peer resources all in one place to
support and enrich the learning process.
